Simple but Chic:

Five Looks That Master the Art of Effortless

There’s a kind of elegance that never tries too hard. It doesn’t shout, it doesn’t pile on, and it certainly doesn’t need the latest trend to hold itself up. It’s the woman who walks out the door in a striped tee and flat sandals and still manages to turn every head on the street. The secret is never the most expensive piece. It’s the balance, the proportion, and knowing exactly what to leave off.

This season I’m reducing it all to one idea: less noise, more intention. Five formulas for dressing well without overthinking it, built on the kind of basics you already own, or that deserve a permanent place in your wardrobe.

01. The Breton classic, sharpened

The striped tee is the safest starting point there is, which is precisely why it deserves a little tension. Here I pair it with tailored black shorts from Brunello Cucinelli: the pressed pleat and the right length instantly elevate what could otherwise read as a Sunday outfit.

The magic is in the accessories. A quilted Chanel bag delivers the quiet luxury contrast the mix is asking for, and the Oran sandals from Hermès finish it with that understated Italian restraint that never misses. Tee by Citizens of Humanity. Dark sunglasses, golden skin, and nothing else.

Why it works: the matte black of the shorts against the cream stripes creates a clean contrast. Tonal would feel flat here. The contrast is what makes it editorial.

02. Denim with a wink of color

The short denim dress is the most underrated piece of summer. It has structure, it flatters, and it dresses itself. In this look I let it breathe, with a fitted silhouette and vertical seams that lengthen the line, then add the single accent of the entire outfit: red patent Mary Janes from Augusta the Brand.

The red is no accident. It’s the detail that turns a simple dress into a statement. For daytime, a white shirt from & Other Stories knotted at the waist or thrown over the shoulders, and a raffia basket bag from Sézane that brings texture and the ease of a Mediterranean market. Dress by ASOS.

Why it works: when everything else is neutral, a single hit of red reads as a decision, not an accident. That’s the rule of the single accent.

03. Navy on navy, the quiet formula

If one combination defines quiet luxury, it’s tonal navy. A ribbed tee from Sézane with linen shorts from Ralph Lauren in the same register: monochrome, but with depth thanks to the contrast between the knit and the linen.

What breaks the uniformity is caramel. Loafer mules from Scarosso with that gold horsebit detail, a slim leather belt, and a structured Bobbies bag in cognac. The navy turns warm, refined, almost Parisian.

Why it works: monochrome is never dull when you play with texture. The cognac leather is the breath of air the eye needs.

04. Fresh green for sunlit days

The most relaxed look of the set, and maybe the hardest to nail. A green knit vest from Doen, that springy green that flatters every skin tone, over white shorts from Mango. Clean, luminous, effortless on the surface.

The key is in the natural textures: cream crochet Mary Janes from Stradivarius and a striped raffia tote from ASOS that lends a handmade touch. Iced coffee in hand, optional but recommended.

Why it works: color on the clothing, artisanal neutrals on the accessories. The color stays fresh rather than childish because everything else stays calm.

05. Stripes after dark

The most elevated look of the set, and proof that “simple” can absolutely go out at night. A crisp blue striped shirt from WNU worn loose and slightly undone, layered over a black slip midi skirt from Massimo Dutti. The contrast between the relaxed cotton shirt and the fluid skirt is exactly what makes it feel considered rather than thrown together.

Keep the rest minimal and let the proportions speak: barely-there black strappy sandals from Reformation, a sleek baguette bag from YSL, and a chunky gold chain to warm up all that cool blue and black. Sleeves pushed up, top buttons open. The undone detail is the whole point.

Why it works: a casual shirt over an elegant skirt is the easiest way to mix something polished with something relaxed. The softer top stops the slip skirt from feeling too formal, and the gold pulls it all together.

The editor’s note

If you take away one thing, let it be this: simple doesn’t mean careless. It means edited. Each of these looks starts from two or three basics and lets a single accent (a bag, a red shoe, a piece of cognac leather) do all the work.

Choose your basics well, mind the proportion, and let the rest be space. That’s where truly chic lives.
