Blue and White: A Summer Wardrobe in Denim, Gingham and Cream

There is a reason blue and white never leaves the rotation. It is the most forgiving palette in summer, the one that reads clean against a tan, looks expensive even when it is not, and somehow belongs everywhere, the harbour, the city, the long lunch that turns into early evening. This season I keep returning to it: a little gingham, a lot of denim, soft cream linen for the warmest days, and the occasional white dress for when the night calls for something. Six looks, one quiet palette, endless ways to wear it.

Gingham by the sea

@leolie_leolie

Gingham is the print I trust most in July, and a drop-waist cut keeps it from feeling too sweet. This Zara dress has the kind of dropped, gathered hem that moves beautifully and skims everything you want it to. I styled it with a crochet bucket hat from COS, a navy flap bag from Chanel to anchor the blue, and woven Mary Jane flats by Gianvito Rossi that pick up the warmth of the straw. It is the look I would wear to a coastal lunch and then keep on straight through to aperitivo.

The beach shirt

@leolie_leolie

Nothing feels more effortless than a crisp poplin shirt worn open over very little. This blue one from With Nothing Underneath is the kind of piece you reach for over a swimsuit, half buttoned, sleeves pushed back. Underneath, broderie lace shorts from Zimmermann keep it soft and a little romantic. A woven raffia tote from COS carries everything for the day, and clear jelly flip-flops by Christopher Esber keep the whole thing light and unserious. This is summer dressing at its easiest.

A white dress for evening

leolie_leolie

When the evening asks for something prettier, a white dress always answers. This corset style from House of CB has ruched puff sleeves and a bubble hem that feels both nostalgic and current. I kept the accessories simple and dark to let the dress do the talking: a black quilted flap from Chanel worn close to the body, and patent Mary Janes from Next that bring a little polish without ever feeling fussy. Understated, feminine, and exactly right for a warm night out.

Double denim, done lightly

@leolie_leolie

Denim on denim sounds heavy until you wear it in summer, and then it just works. The trick is contrast in the washes. A faded chambray shirt from Ralph Lauren, worn open and loose, sits over high-rise cut-off shorts from Aritzia in a lighter, lived-in blue. A black flap from Chanel grounds all that denim and keeps the look from tipping into something too casual. This is the outfit I throw on without thinking and somehow always feel best in.

The denim dress

@leolie_leolie

If double denim feels like too much, a denim dress gives you the same easy spirit in a single piece. This halter style from Pull & Bear has a bubble hem and a gathered neckline that feels quietly elevated, the kind of dress that looks more expensive than it is. I paired it with simple black leather thong sandals from H&M and a suede Amazona bag from Loewe in soft camel, which brings a little warmth against all that indigo. Minimal effort, maximum payoff.

Linen, with a little red

@leolie_leolie

For the hottest days, nothing beats cream linen. This matching set from Böhme, a puff-sleeve top with scalloped shorts, is the definition of breezy, and it photographs beautifully in soft natural light. To keep it from feeling too neutral, I added a small pop of colour: red woven ballet flats from ASOS and a navy and cream striped crossbody from Vanessa Bruno. It is proof that quiet dressing does not have to mean colourless. Sometimes one bright note is all a look needs.

Six outfits, one palette, and a whole summer’s worth of ways to wear blue and white. Whichever you reach for, keep it easy, keep it light, and let the colour do the work.

xx, Leolie
