White Was Always Going to Win This Summer
There are trends, and then there is the white dress, which is less of a trend and more of a fact of summer. It comes back every June without asking permission. It does not need a stylist or a moodboard or a reason. You put it on, you step outside, and somehow you look like you have somewhere beautiful to be even when you are only going to get an espresso.
What changes year to year is not the dress itself but the mood around it. This season the white dress is softer, a little undone, a little sun-bleached at the edges. It leans Grecian one day and old-money the next. It borrows a polka dot, a bit of gingham, a butterfly clasp. And the whole thing lives or dies by the bag you decide to carry with it.
Here are six versions I keep coming back to.
The One That Moves With the Wind

A plunging halter, ruched at the waist, with a skirt that does most of the talking the moment there is a breeze. This is the dress that makes an entrance whether or not you intended one. I love it best with something unexpected on the arm, which is exactly why the mustard Hogan crossbody works so well here. White wants a jolt of warm yellow against it, and a smaller structured bag keeps the whole look from tipping into bridal. Gold jewelry, bare legs, and let the dress do the rest.

The Polka Dot Returns, Quietly

Cream with black dots is the most grown-up way to wear a print, and this Zara dress with its little tie at the neck has a sixties-by-the-sea quality I find very hard to resist. It is the kind of thing you wear with a gelato in hand and absolutely no agenda. The move is to keep the accessories clean and creamy so the dots stay the main event, which is where the woven Bottega Veneta clutch comes in. Same off-white family as the dress, all texture, no logo. Quiet, considered, and just a little bit retro.

Sun on Skin, Nothing to Do

The long white cutout dress is summer in its laziest, most flattering form. This Cin Cin style with the gold butterfly hardware and the open sides is barely there in the best way, made for the kind of afternoon that has no plan beyond warm skin and a long walk. Because the dress is so airy and white, I like grounding it with something with a bit of weight and warmth, and the brown matelassé Miu Miu bag does precisely that. The contrast of soft white fabric against rich tan leather is the whole look.

Linen, a Sweater, and Somewhere to Be

Not every white dress needs to be a moment. Sometimes it is just a clean linen slip you can live in, and this St.Agni mini is exactly that, the kind of piece that looks effortless because it genuinely is. Throw a Massimo Dutti knit over the shoulders for the cooler end of the evening, and suddenly you have the most uncomplicated outfit in your closet doing all the work. Finish with the bamboo-handle Jil Sander bag, which adds just enough polish to make casual look intentional. This is the off-duty white dress, and it might be my favorite of the lot.

A Little Bit of the Countryside

Pale blue gingham with an eyelet ruffle is the softest, most romantic corner of this edit, and not technically white, but it belongs here all the same. This Lovers + Friends top and skirt set has a sweet, slightly nostalgic feeling, the sort of thing that wants a silk scarf in the hair and a slow morning at the market. To keep it from going too costume-pretty, I would anchor it with the tan Dior saddle bag. The warm brown leather grounds all that pastel and quietly signals that you know exactly what you are doing.

The Dress You Wear to Be Looked At

And then there is the structured one. This ivory House of CB midi, fitted through the bodice with a full skirt that swings, is the white dress at its most polished and most deliberate. It is the look you reach for when you want to feel a little dressed up, a little classic, a little untouchable. There is really only one bag for it, and it is the beige quilted Chanel flap, because some pairings do not need to be reinvented. White, gold hardware, soft tan leather, done.
